Before we start: It looks I am going to be the party-pooper with this one! The word Premium is not protected, so this means nothing to me. To my opinion it mostly means: we ask more money for it! I am not sure about this one, since I don’t know the price.
Looks: There is nothing wrong with the looks. The square bottle with the anchor logo on it looks great. The only thing is: I didn’t get a box with it but a bag. But it all still looks nice! The colour looks good and suggests long ageing. The certificado de embotellado on the back gives the bottle a more unique and limited character. Perhaps PR, but it might work for other people.
Nose: Very smooth with only a small hint of alcohol in it. There is a little bit of wood in the nose, but it suggests this Rum is younger than 25 years old. The smoothness also brings some honey, caramel and buttery candy with it. Also some fudge can be found here.
Taste: Here you will find more power than in the nose. It is concentrated, but not heavy. There is more ageing here, but still not the thing I expect from a 25 Year old Rum. There is no bite in the Rum, but there is some crisp freshness in it that really keeps it alive and kicking. The mouth feeling is oily thick (so again concentration) with toasted sugar and a bit buttery, so I think they use a little bit of caramel as well. So far the taste is the strongest point.
After: The freshness stays with the oily feel. The aftertaste is not too long, but is OK. Still no real 25 years of ageing in the mouth.
Extra: There are no really extra’s in this Rum for me, although I do like the taste. All strong and weak points are already written down. The weakest point for me is the missing of a real ageing taste.
Mix ability: I don’t think this Rum will go well in the mix. It is very smooth and I think you loose that in the mix. If the colour of the mix doesn’t have a problem with it, this brown Rum can be used instead of sugar water. That will give the Cocktail a real kick. But I will drink it pure as it is, no water and certainly no ice!
Total: Nothing wrong here, but nothing out of the ordinary for me as well. Big plus is the taste, which is very good. Still, the knowledge of the age (and even considering they call it Premium) I think I am allowed to expect more. I also think that Americans (and their sweet tooth) appreciate this one more than the Europeans who prefer more dry notes (even though there are exceptions to this rule).
